CBRE Ltd at Spitalfields

Kalliopi Lemos fishing boat sculpture

Since 2006, Dickson Russell have worked with CBRE at Spitalfields E1 to curate and manage an ongoing programme of site-responsive sculpture and installation in and around Bishop's Square.

The latest addition is a large-scale and compelling sculpture by Greek-born artist, Kalliopi Lemos, sited at the end of Lamb Street; it will be on view until February 2018.

The installation is intended to make direct reference to the successive waves of migrants who have arrived and found a refuge in Spitalfields across the centuries.

The fishing boat, used to transport refugees from Turkey to Greek, was acquired by the artist after being abandoned on the Greek shore.

It is now filled with seven seated steel figures, whose silent human presence conveys feelings of vulnerability, expectation and resignation, their forms symbolising the universal struggle and suffering of millions of displaced persons throughout the world today.

Kalliopi Lemos is represented in London by Gazelli Art House.
